Nagarjunakonda
5th March 2008

I just came back from a place called Nagarjunakonda in Hyderbad, where I guess our great master Nagarjuna or Lhundrub (as he was known in Tibet) spent most of his time. It is generally believed that he is still around in this world, remaining in his own realisaton for people who are realised in the Madyamaka (Middle Path) or the True State of Emptiness.

I felt great devotion when I saw the hill of Nagarjuna and tried to remain in the meditative state throughout the journey. It worked for some time, but not for long.

I was a little sad to see how little life of Mahayana Buddhism could be seen now in that holy place. Not even one single monastery nor Mahayana Buddhist shrine could be found. I actually don't mind which Yana, but I really couldn't even see any new Buddhist settlement. Instead, many other things from other spiritual beliefs have been set up and settled there.

I felt quite sorry for Nagarjuna that we as his followers not only did not follow his teaching properly, but also, from the mundane point of view, we are not even paying attention to his remains and holy place. This reminds me of what I said just a few hours back. We as lineage holders and followers have great responsibility to support and protect our lineage, so that we can keep the stream of blessings for future generations. Otherwise, our spiritual heritages will look like Nagarjunakonda externally as well as inwardly.
