Namdruk
22nd September 2008
There is something that I want to tell you which I have kept in my heart for a long time. I have been trying my best for almost a decade to get the restoration permission for Namdruk, where the nine dragons appeared and became a very important spot. It was from Namdruk that the teaching of the Drukpa Lineage started to spread to every corner of the world. Thanks to these nine dragons, the name "Drukpa" is now being known in Tibet, Ladakh, Lahaul, Kinnaur, Nepal, Bhutan, Europe, America, Asia and many other places in the world.
A few months ago, an official letter came to notify my people in China and Hong Kong who are helping us with the application for restoration of Namdruk that the application was rejected by the local government. We have since been working very hard to find out what has happened, but no concrete answers have been given to us up until today. I am very disheartened by this news since I was hoping for the sake of Tibetan welfare, everyone including local and central government will support the restoration of Namdruk, however it seems the restoration of Namdruk is sacrificed due to some local political issues, which I don't understand. This will never be beneficial for anyone, except bringing negative consequences in the short and long run. Not only the international community of the Drukpa Lineage would be disappointed, but also all other colleagues and their lineages would also feel the same way.
As far as I can remember, since my first life in Tibet as Tsangpa Gyare until this life, I have never been involved in politics and I have tried my best not to get myself involved voluntarily, because by getting myself actively or voluntarily involved, I would drag the entire lineage into politics, which can be confusing for all the followers and the observers. I am not against politics and I understand that political activities can help to support spiritual and humanitarian causes. Since beginningless time until today, lots of Bodhisattvas have taken the form of politicians to rule and guide with their wisdom and compassion, to bring tremendous benefits to our world. However, the Drukpa Lineage has a different style, the style of wandering yogis, therefore we are well-known in the world as the Yogi Lineage.
As such, I cannot understand what threat Namdruk would be for the Chinese government. They can check our history and see what we have done to disrupt social stability. In order to show the harmony and freedom in Tibet, they should give people like us permission to restore the historical monuments, for the sake of not only their religious affairs, but also their image in the foreign eyes.
I was initially thinking of moving the gigantic statue of Amitabha originally for Druk Amitabha Mountain in Kathmandu to Namdruk, to restore the importance of the Drukpa Lineage in Tibet, where it originated and internationally, everyone was very happy, not only my followers, all the friends and observers of the lineage were very thrilled about this idea. Unfortunately, the local government has rejected this offer, together with the rejection of the restoration of Namdruk. I feel that whoever is there to stop this benevolent activity, if they are Buddhists and have some heart for the improvement of the country, they have indeed been very foolish, from the point of view of religion, politics and tourism.
By now, you should know what I am going through and I am sorry that I have to put it here to share with the world, and especially with those who have kindly given their financial support to this restoration project. If we are still unable to receive approval, then we may have to redirect the funds to restore other important heritages where our effort is appreciated.
That’s all for now.
